Among the winners was Mai Thi Hien – the wife of war martyr Pham Huu Huyen - who has overcome her hardships to bring up and teach her children to become good students. Another was Trinh Cong Thanh who has coped with his disabilities to become successful in the emerging field of information  technology. He was awarded the “Hero of Information  Technology” title in 2005 and is now manager  of Rong Viet Limited Company in Hanoi.
 
 Participants were also moved to hear the story  of Ngo Van Tho, an 11th grader from the central province of Quang Tri, who jumped into the river to save his friends.
 
 Meanwhile, the Sao Mai  civil engineering and investment joint stock company from the southern province of An Giang was hailed as an example of successful business  which has contributed to many charitable programmes. Between 2006-2007, the company raised VND8 billion for charitable activities. Notably, it has created many jobs  for local people, particularly war veterans and those who finished their military service. To date, the company has generated steady jobs  for 2,000 employees and presented gifts to social policy beneficiaries, including the poor, orphans and the elderly in convalescent centres.
 
 Addressing the ceremony, State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan praised the contributions that companies like Sao Mai  have made to national development and said that these models should be replicated nationwide.
 
 “Vietnam Glory not only honours outstanding individuals  and collectives but also encourages the entire people and army to work harder to build a strong and prosperous nation,” said Mrs Doan.
 
 The annual Vietnam  Glory awards were jointly launched in 2003 by Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper, Radio  the Voice of Vietnam, Vietnam  Television  and several businesses.
