N.T.A, a young trainee present at the opening ceremony of an MBA programme coordinated by a HCM  City-based university and Belgian university, said: “I’m following the MBA programme to prepare for my future; though, actually, I do not need that knowledge right now.”

Meanwhile, H., the director of a famous garment company in HCM  City, explaining the reason why she is following a programme, said that she needs new knowledge to support her business.

Everyone rushing to study

A quick survey conducted by Tuoi tre newspaper shows that the fee for a MBA training  course ranges between $6,000-15,000, $8-9,000 on average. Most programmes are open to university graduates who have several years of experience.

There are some 40 trainees in H.’s class, 90% of whom are older. Only a few are under 30.

According to CFVG, the school of management, the average age of the trainees in its latest training  course was 27. Most of them are working for banks, insurance and service companies. N.T.T, a banking staff, said that three of five staffs in her division are taking the same course.

Most MBAs, no matter how old they are and where they come from, can find interest in and benefit from the training  courses. N.N.C, who is running a real  estate firm and has just finished a MBA course, said that he learnt a lot from the training  course. T.N, who has been following a course for four months, said that the course is worth the money. “With the knowledge I have got, I have just got a good contract,” he said.

Every university opening MBA classes

Realising the high demand for MBA studying, a lot of MBA programmes and training  courses have been receiving cooperation of foreign universities. It seems that all big universities in HCM  City have such programmes.

CFVG, which is being operated by the Paris  Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIP), is one of the earliest management  schools in Vietnam, where some 900 trainees have studied so far.

There are many more MBA programmes and training  courses, such as the ones co-provided by the HCM  City Open University and a Belgian University; by the HCM  City University of Technologies and universities from Germany and the US; by the HCM  City Economics University and universities from the US (Pomona) and Canada  (Quebec); and by the HCM  City University of Social Sciences and Humanities and Belgian United  Business  Institutes.

The number of MBA training  courses is increasing rapidly, and the number of trainees is increasing likewise. On average, every class has 40 trainees. CFVG has enrolled 269 trainees lately, an increase of 22% over last year (among 700 candidates).

A lecturer at the HCM  City Economics University said that the MBA courses are organised well and convenient for trainees to follow. Organised under the mode of part time courses, trainees can go to classes in the evening or Saturday and Sunday.

However, he has also expressed concern over the quality of MBA courses. Too many trainees in every class may be one of the reasons behind the quality problems.

In fact, MBA classes are not the places where all necessary knowledge about business  administration  can be provided. Therefore, new university graduates, who need practical experience, should get work experience before continuing studying.
