Prominent among the participants were Deputy Prime Minister  and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem, Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission of Organisation  and President of the Vietnam-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Union Ho Duc Viet, and Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam  Mitsuo Sakaba.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy PM Khiem stressed that the past 35 years was only a short period in the 400-year-old relations between Vietnam  and Japan, but it saw the greatest developments in many areas from politics, economy  and trade to science and technology, education  and training.

The Deputy PM affirmed that in its renewal process and international integration, Vietnam  has always considered Japan one of the most important partners in investment, trade and official development assistance.

He said Japan’s ODA has contributed to Vietnam’s rapid and sustainable socio-economic development, especially poverty reduction.

Deputy PM Khiem expressed his belief that Vietnam-Japan ties would continue develop vigorously towards a strategic partnership, for the long-term interest of each country, as well as for peace, prosperity in Asia  and the world  as a whole.

Japanese Ambassador Mitsuo Sakaba said that the two countries’ relations have reached a level unimaginable 35 years ago, greatly boosted then by Prime Minister  Nguyen Tan Dung’s Japan visit in October 2006, former Japanese Prime Minister  Shinzo Abe’s Vietnam  visit in November 2006, and President Nguyen Minh Triet’s Japan visit in November 2007. The two countries has built important ties in trade, investment and ODA in particular, the ambassador said.

He noted that the ninth session of negotiations in preparation of the signing of an economic partner agreement (EPA) will take place in Hanoi next week, adding the negotiation process is coming to an end for early signing of the agreement, which will be a basis for the two countries to promote economic cooperation in the future.
